How Cleaning Your Oven is Like Running Your Business

I am making a dobos torte for New Year’s this year.  But in order to do so, I had to clean my oven.  Now, cleaning my oven doesn’t involve the work it did 25 years ago, when I cleaned it once a month with a can of Easy Off oven cleaner and a scrub sponge, but I still put the task off because of the smell it fills the house with.

ovenHowever, in order to make the dobos torte, I needed a clean oven.  I didn’t want the odors from the burning drips and drops of pervious creations flavoring the delicate cakes of my torte.  So I set the oven to Self Clean after the pizza from last night’s dinner made a mess that could no longer be ignored.

Performing your tasks at work is much the same as cleaning your oven to make a special creation.  As we’re busy working at the jobs in front of us, often times there are little messes along the way that are made – unfiled papers, unrecorded expenses, notes scratched on the backs of envelopes that are mislaid, etc.  As these messes grow and accumulate, they will soon begin to “flavor” the work you’re performing, and not in a good way.Unorganized

As we close out this old year, make it a point to get a handle on things now.  If you’re not the organized type, and you might not ever be, you could probably still work in some improvements to your way of doing things, and you could definitely schedule in some “catch up” days throughout the year to clean that oven floor – so to speak.

The work you produce will come out that much sweeter when you have everything in order.  Stay on top of things before they get too bad.

What is your weakness when it comes to running your business and how do you overcome it?

Got a circle for me on Google+?

Unless Google pulls off some great marketing campaign, I don’t see Google+ gaining further on Facebook – with the average user. But one thing I’ve noticed personally is that for Business to Business – Google+ has become a great place for sharing and networking. If you have a Facebook page for your business, there’s really no reason you shouldn’t have a Google+ page as well – especially if your c…lients are other business owners or you have information to share with business owners and other “groups.” Need help getting started? Here’s a great link if you want to do it yourself. If you don’t have the time or desire to set up your account and keep it active, give me a call!

END OF YEAR SAVINGS ON ORIGINAL WEBSITES

box2_256 (1)

You or a friend (or both) can save 15% off a website. Offer expires 12-31-2011

Did one of your Christmas gifts include a new website? No?!

Did you give a small business owner a new website for Christmas this year? You didn’t!?!

OK, I admit. Giving a website for Christmas is a little – weird. (Although one of my clients is getting a new website as her Christmas present – look for that next year.)

So, you might not give a website to a small business owner you know NEEDS one. But!! You can give them my information AND if they say they got my name from you having read this on Facebook or Google+, or even right here on my blog, they’ll get a 15% discount on a website. Not a web page – a website. See, in that way, you kind of are giving them a website – or at least a great savings on an ORIGINAL DESIGN website – no templates here folks.

Wait! You’re a small business owner and want to give yourself a website because NOBODY gave you one. Cool. You can save 15% too.

OFFER EXPIRES 12/31/2011 and this is only for folks who’ve not agreed to any work with me up to this point. Just mention this post of Monday morning – December 26th – and let’s get to work!

Google+ a Month In…

It’s been one month since my post about Google+ for businesses.  What do you think about it?   Have you joined up as an individual?  What about for your business?

Got a circle for me on Google+?

For businesses, Google+ is great!  As a matter of fact, if you aren’t on Google+, you’re only hurting your business – considering the weight Google is giving to Google+, sharing of pages, circles, and more.

But, in order to rank, you need fellow Google+ users to play along.  With 800,000,000 users heavily invested in their Facebook pages, how many are going to, and even want to, put that much effort into another social media “project” like Google+.  The numbers of new Google+ members seems to have leveled off, and with the launching of Facebook’s new Timeline, Facebook users will have enough to keep them busy this holiday season.  If they put any time into building their timelines on Facebook, I doubt they’ll see a need to have a Google+ account.  ”Who has time to keep up with both?”

But, back to Google+ for business.  I really don’t think businesses have a choice.  We need to have a good Google+ page and keep it active.  We have to play by the rules of the search engine results ranking game, and the game says use Google+.Social-Media-Rocks

I think it’s a good thing.  Keeping a Google+ page (and a Facebook page) for your business forces you into interacting with your clients and customers and in a unique and fun way!  So, embrace the times, jump in with both feet, and have some fun with social media!!  You just need a plan and a way to implement it.

Need some help getting started?  I’d be glad to get things rolling for you, and keep them rolling along if you don’t have the time.  Give me a call and start off the New Year driving smoothly along that road of Social Median business interaction!

Do Five Things this Holiday Season

just 5 thingsWhile you’re on a slow down or vacation break from work in the upcoming weeks, try getting these five things accomplished.

1)    Remember the true meaning of this season, and look at every day from that perspective.

2)    Give to yourself and your family as much time as you’ve been giving to your work and your clients.  This season won’t be back again and you’ll cherish the memories you build this year for years to come.  Next year at this time when you ask yourself, “What do you remember most from last December” you want the answer to come in the form of meaningful events and happy memories.  You won’t remember the late nights you worked to “catch up” while everyone else was enjoying this special time of year.

3)    Remember to give to the charities in your town that do so much this year and are struggling with financial and volunteer donations.  A little extra money or a few hours of volunteer time can make a huge difference.

4)    Go to local events that your town, a church or a school have put together – like a parade or a Breakfast with Santa (more fun and appropriate if you bring your child with you.)

5)    Do nothing for a couple of days.  No business emails, no blog reading, no strategic planning.  Just sit back and chill for awhile.  You’ll be back to work and the full swing of things soon enough.

A few of these suggestions can be continued on into the New Year and help keep you grounded when your work is pressing down on you.  Make 2012 the year you put things in the right order.

Have a great season and make some happy memories this year.
