Continuing on with how you can Boost Your Social Media Results, remember the 80/20 rule. Eighty percent of your social media posts should be sharing and twenty percent selling. Share relevant information your readers can use. A few weeks ago I was reading the post of one Facebook member who is a professional in his/her field and this person had only had their Facebook account for a few months. They were posting minimally, and their posts were negative in tone. While they were very knowledgeable in their field, their wall wasn’t a positive place to hang out.
Recently this person began to write that his/her followers weren’t appreciative enough of the professional information they were sharing with their followers, and asked their followers to show their appreciation by donating to them, through PayPal, a minimum of $5 or they would stop sharing their informative posts.
It was obvious this user did not understand what social media was about. The demand for a fee was so over-the-top, I immediately went to their wall from my newsfeed to “unlike” the page. When I arrived, I saw I was not the only one to do so.
Moral of the story, your followers don’t owe you anything. You owe them relevant content shared in informative or entertaining ways and with no expectation of anything else in return.
By following the 80/20 rule of sharing, you’ll be seen as a participant in the social media dialog, and not an overzealous salesman trying to meet his quota.
